Knowing where your toby is, could save you a world of grief.

Too often we have attended a property for an emergency and the owner or tenant did not know where to isolate the water to the house. The delay in turning the water off was the difference between some wet carpet to devastating water pouring out the front door (after coming down 2 levels of the house)

Your toby valve is the main water isolation to the property from the council supply. This is usually found at the front of your boundary or in some cases next to the house in a multiple unit property. Newer toby boxes have a blue lid and a blue valve inside that should isolate your water to the house, the older toby’s are a round metal lid.

Turn the valve off “CLOCKWISE” and on anti clockwise (but make sure you turn it one rotation clockwise after turning it back on) this stops it jamming in the on position.

The council own the toby and therefore should it not properly isolate the water they are required to repair or maintain this for you.  In Queenstown NZ you can also locate your toby valve using the mapping found here. Toby location
